UNI-GAUGE is a common entrance exam conducted by the ERA Foundation for admission to engineering and other programmes at participating private universities across India. For Karnataka students, UNI-GAUGE is a supplementary option — most Karnataka students use KCET and COMEDK first, but UNI-GAUGE opens doors to certain universities not covered by those exams.
This guide clarifies exactly what UNI-GAUGE is, which Karnataka-relevant universities accept it, and whether it is worth appearing for alongside your other entrance exams.
UNI-GAUGE 2026 Key Dates
ERA Foundation publishes the official UNI-GAUGE schedule at uni-gauge.org. Dates below are based on previous year patterns. Always verify at the official site.

What is UNI-GAUGE?
UNI-GAUGE — formerly known as ERA UNI-GAUGE — is a single common entrance test accepted by multiple private universities for undergraduate admission to engineering (B.Tech), architecture, management and other programmes. The test is conducted by ERA Foundation, a Bangalore-based education assessment body.
Unlike KCET (which is for Karnataka government and aided colleges) or COMEDK (which covers specific private Karnataka colleges), UNI-GAUGE is accepted by a network of private universities that have individually partnered with ERA Foundation. The list of participating institutions changes annually.
Eligibility
- Class 12 passed or appearing with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for engineering
- Minimum 45% aggregate in qualifying examination (varies by participating university)
- No age restriction for most programmes
- Karnataka PUC accepted
Exam Pattern
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | 40 | 160 |
| Chemistry | 40 | 160 |
| Mathematics | 40 | 160 |
| Total | 120 | 480 |
Duration: 2 hours. Computer-based test. Marking: +4 correct, −1 wrong. Difficulty level: between Class 12 board and JEE Mains. Students preparing for JEE Mains are well-prepared for UNI-GAUGE without additional effort.
Participating Colleges — Karnataka-Relevant Institutions
UNI-GAUGE participating institutions change each year. The full list for 2026 will be published at uni-gauge.org when registration opens. Historically, institutions that have accepted UNI-GAUGE scores include KLE Technological University (Hubli), Alliance University (Bangalore), Reva University (Bangalore), and other private universities in Karnataka and neighbouring states.
| Category | Examples (Historical — Verify for 2026) |
|---|---|
| Karnataka Private Universities | KLE Tech Hubli, Alliance University, Reva University |
| Tamil Nadu Private Universities | Various Chennai-based private universities |
| Andhra Pradesh Universities | Various private universities |
| Other States | Varies by year |
Important: Verify that your specific target university is on the current participating list before registering. The list of participating institutions varies significantly year to year, and some universities that accepted UNI-GAUGE previously may not participate in 2026.
How to Apply
- Register at uni-gauge.org
- Fill personal and academic details
- Choose test centre — Bangalore available
- Pay registration fee (approximately ₹1,000–1,500 — verify for 2026)
- Download admit card and appear for exam
- After results, apply separately to each participating university using your UNI-GAUGE score
Key difference from KCET/COMEDK: UNI-GAUGE is a score, not a centralised counselling system. Each participating university has its own admission process. Scoring well in UNI-GAUGE opens doors but you must apply separately to each university.
Preparation Strategy
Overlap with JEE and KCET
UNI-GAUGE tests Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at Class 12 level. Students preparing for KCET or JEE Mains are already prepared for UNI-GAUGE. Dedicated separate preparation is not necessary — appearing for UNI-GAUGE alongside KCET and COMEDK adds minimal burden.
Negative Marking
Unlike SRMJEEE (no negative marking), UNI-GAUGE has −1 for wrong answers. Do not guess randomly. Only attempt questions where you are reasonably confident. In the last few minutes, skip questions you have not read rather than guessing blindly.
UNI-GAUGE vs KCET vs COMEDK
| Exam | Scope | Best Outcome | Should Karnataka Students Apply? |
|---|---|---|---|
| KCET | Karnataka government + aided | RVCE, MSRIT, BIT | Yes — primary exam |
| COMEDK | Karnataka private colleges | Top Karnataka private engineering | Yes — secondary exam |
| UNI-GAUGE | Specific private universities | KLE Tech, Alliance, Reva | Yes — if targeting participating universities |
My advice for Karnataka students: always appear for KCET and COMEDK first. Add UNI-GAUGE only if your target list includes universities that accept it and don't offer COMEDK admission. The application fee is low and the exam overlaps with your existing preparation.
KLE Technological University — The Top Karnataka UNI-GAUGE Target
KLE Technological University (formerly BVB College) in Hubli is one of the strongest institutions that has historically accepted UNI-GAUGE. KLE Tech is NAAC A+ accredited and has a strong engineering programme with good North Karnataka industry connections. For students from North Karnataka districts, KLE Tech via UNI-GAUGE is a worthwhile option. Verify KLE Tech's participation status for 2026 at their official admissions page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is UNI-GAUGE score valid for multiple universities?
Yes. One UNI-GAUGE score can be used to apply to all participating institutions. However, each university has its own application and admission process — there is no single centralised counselling. Apply separately to each target institution.
Is UNI-GAUGE valid for only engineering?
No. UNI-GAUGE also covers admission to architecture, pharmacy, and management programmes at some participating institutions. Check the current participating institution list for non-engineering programmes.
Is UNI-GAUGE score valid for the next year?
No. UNI-GAUGE scores are valid only for the current admission cycle.
Does Manipal University accept UNI-GAUGE?
Manipal University (MAHE) has its own entrance exam — MET (Manipal Entrance Test). Verify the current acceptance policy at Manipal's official admissions site before applying to UNI-GAUGE expecting Manipal admission.
Can I use my JEE Mains score instead of UNI-GAUGE at participating universities?
Some UNI-GAUGE participating universities also accept JEE Mains scores directly. Check each university's admission policy individually. If you have a good JEE Mains percentile, it may be accepted directly without needing to appear for UNI-GAUGE.

UniGauge-E — What It Is and Which Colleges Accept It
UniGauge-E (University Gauge Engineering) is a national engineering entrance exam conducted by ERA Foundation — an alternative to JEE Main for admission to private universities and colleges across India. It is not a government exam and is not conducted by NTA. Approximately 150+ private universities and colleges accept UniGauge-E scores including Presidency University Bengaluru, CMR University, New Horizon College of Engineering and several other Bengaluru private engineering colleges. UniGauge-E is significantly easier than JEE Main — students who scored poorly in JEE Main sometimes use UniGauge-E as an alternative pathway to private engineering college admission.
UniGauge vs KCET vs COMEDK — Which to Attempt
| Exam | Difficulty | Colleges Covered | Fees | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KCET | Moderate | 300+ Karnataka colleges, government seats | Rs 500-650 | Karnataka domicile students — always attempt |
| COMEDK UGET | Moderate-High | 180+ Karnataka private colleges | Rs 1,200 | Non-Karnataka students, management quota backup |
| JEE Main | High | NITs, IIITs, top private colleges nationally | Rs 1,000 | Students targeting NITs, top national colleges |
| UniGauge-E | Low-Moderate | 150+ private colleges nationally | Rs 1,200 | Safety net for students who underperformed in KCET/JEE |
Karnataka domicile students should always prioritise KCET — it gives access to government colleges at government fees that UniGauge-E cannot match. UniGauge-E is useful only as a last resort if KCET, COMEDK and JEE Main results are all poor. Check the official UniGauge website for current participating colleges before registering — the list changes annually.
UniGauge Counselling Process
UniGauge counselling runs online after results — register at unigauge.com, fill choices from participating colleges, get allotment. Unlike KCET which has multiple rounds with clear government-managed timelines, UniGauge counselling timelines vary by participating college. Some colleges use UniGauge scores for direct admission without a centralised counselling round — contact the specific college after checking your score. For Karnataka students, the most relevant UniGauge-accepting colleges in Bengaluru include Presidency University, CMR University, New Horizon College of Engineering and Jain University. Verify current participating college list at unigauge.com before registration — the list changes annually. UniGauge-E scores are valid for one academic year only.
Bottom line for Karnataka students: KCET is always your primary attempt — it covers government colleges at Rs 30,000-50,000/year fees that no private entrance exam can match. COMEDK is your second attempt for private Bengaluru engineering colleges. UniGauge is a distant third — useful only if KCET and COMEDK don't yield a satisfactory allotment. Register for all three if you can — total registration cost under Rs 3,000 and the safety net is worth it. Use the KCET rank predictor to check your primary options before counselling.
