BA Colleges in Mangalore 2027: Govt & Private Fees

Written by L K Monu Borkala, Founder & Chief Strategist

BA colleges in Mangalore start at ₹21,720 for the full three-year course at the government University College, Hampankatta (Careers360), and reach ₹1,16,000 for BA Journalism at Yenepoya University (Collegedunia). Portals count anywhere from 17 to 30 colleges, and fees change with the subject combination, so compare the exact combination before you apply.

How Many BA Colleges Are There in Mangalore?

Portals disagree. Collegedunia lists 17 BA colleges in Mangalore, CollegeDekho says about 19 (page updated 27 September 2026), and Shiksha's page promises 30. The lists overlap only partly, because some portals count university departments, evening colleges and social-work institutes that others leave out, and some entries, such as SDM College Ujire, sit in Dakshina Kannada towns outside the city. A high count is not the same as a high number of real choices, and CollegeDekho shows fees for only 3 of its 19 entries.

Three portals, three different counts of BA colleges in the same city.

Mangalore's arts colleges fall into three groups: government colleges such as University College, aided or local-body colleges, and private colleges or universities such as St Aloysius, St Agnes and Yenepoya. Most of the older colleges are affiliated to Mangalore University, which publishes its 2026-27 affiliated college list as a PDF.

Our Mangalore degree college shortlist covers BA, BSc, BCom and BBA together, while the BA colleges across Karnataka guide compares Mangalore with the rest of the state.

Government vs Private BA Fees in Mangalore

Anyone checking BA course fees Mangalore will find listed figures that vary about eightfold between colleges. The table lists what each source shows, sorted from lowest to highest, with the source named so you can check it.

The government end is the story. University College, Hampankatta lists NAAC grade A on Careers360 and a full-course fee of ₹21,720, about ₹7,240 a year. That is roughly one-fifth of the ₹1,20,000 total at Besant Women's College or the ₹1,16,000 listed for Yenepoya's BA Journalism.

3 Things to Check Before Trusting a Fee Figure

1. Full course or one year. University College's ₹21,720 covers 36 months, while Besant's ₹40,000 is one year of three. Put both on the same basis before comparing.

2. Subject combination. Within one college and one source, Careers360 lists St Aloysius at ₹64,250 for English and Economics, ₹88,800 for Sociology and Computer Animation, and ₹1,17,800 for Journalism and Psychology. A college has no single BA fee.

3. The category label. Portals disagree on whether a college is government, aided or private. Canara College is the clearest case. This is our reading of the sources, so treat the college's own current fee notice as final.

Government BA colleges Mangalore applicants shortlist first, such as University College and Nehru Memorial College, suit anyone planning for a postgraduate course or a state exam. The private fees start to make sense only when a specific combination, such as Psychology or Journalism, is available nowhere cheaper.

Subject Combinations at Arts Colleges in Mangalore

Arts colleges in Mangalore sell BA as three-subject combinations, not a single major, so the combination often decides the college. The table shows what is listed.

A student who wants to practise as a clinical psychologist needs a postgraduate qualification recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India, so the PG college matters more than the undergraduate brand. Journalism is different: newsroom internships count for more than the fee you paid.

Anyone leaning towards design or visual work should look at fine arts colleges in Karnataka before committing to a BA.

Placements: What the Data Shows

Placement data is thin. Collegedunia shows no placement metrics for 11 of the 17 colleges it lists for Mangalore. St Aloysius is the exception, and its numbers are sobering. Careers360 reports that for the 2022-23 batch, all of the college's three-year undergraduate programmes (not BA alone) had a median salary of ₹3.00 lakh a year and a placement rate of 16.3% among 1,481 graduating students.

That 16.3% is the figure to remember. It suggests most undergraduates reach a job or a postgraduate seat through routes outside campus placement, so ask any college three questions: how many students registered, how many received offers, and what the median (not the average) salary was.

The table shows what the common next steps require.

Next step after BAWhat it usually requires
School teacherA B.Ed after the degree
LawyerAny bachelor's degree, then a three-year LLB
ManagerAny bachelor's degree, then an MBA entrance such as PGCET or KMAT
Civil servicesAny bachelor's degree, then the UPSC or KPSC examination cycle
Clinical psychologistRCI-recognised postgraduate qualification
JournalistInternships and a portfolio; a mass communication PG helps

Each route has a Mangalore guide: B.Ed colleges for teaching, law colleges in Mangalore and MBA options after graduation.

3 Admission Routes Compared

1. Government and affiliated colleges. University College asks for a pass in the two-year Pre-University examination conducted in Karnataka, per Careers360. Besant Women's College lists a pass in Pre-University or equivalent, per CollegeDekho.

2. St Aloysius. Careers360 lists a minimum of 45% in 10+2 from Karnataka PUC, CBSE, ISC, NIOS or other state boards. The process, as described there, is merit-based: apply, attend counselling, receive a seat allotment, complete document verification and pay the fee.

3. Private universities. Yenepoya and Nitte appear in CollegeDekho's list as private universities. Portals attach different entrance-test labels to them, so read the university's own admission notice. Mangalore University's fee page holds the UG admission fee notifications for affiliated colleges as PDFs by academic year.

How to Choose Between BA Colleges in Mangalore

The best BA colleges in Mangalore for you are the ones that fit your next step, not the ones at the top of a portal ranking. Work through four questions in order.

Factor 1: What comes after the BA? For a state exam, an MA or a law degree, the government fee band leaves budget for coaching. For psychology or journalism, pick the college that offers that exact combination.

Factor 2: Total cost. Convert every fee to a three-year total, then add books, transport and hostel.

Factor 3: Combination and staff. Ask for the subject combination in writing, plus the faculty list for your second year.

Factor 4: Living costs. Our guide on why students choose Mangalore covers costs, and the best degree colleges here guide compares BCom, BBA and BSc.

Weighing other cities? Compare government and private BA fees in Bangalore, degree colleges in Mysore or Hassan's degree colleges. Still deciding on a stream? Read courses after 12th commerce, or ask about admission assistance for Karnataka colleges.
