About Govt First Grade College Honavar

Government First Grade College Honavar occupies a two-acre campus in Prabhat Nagar, a residential extension of this coastal town at the mouth of the Sharavathi river. Established in 2007, the college has scaled to over 1,150 students — a rapid build-up for a GFGC on the Uttara Kannada coast, where population density is lower than the inland plains.

NAAC has accredited the college at B grade with a 2.21 CGPA. Under Karnatak University, Dharwad affiliation, the institution runs seven degree programmes: BA, BSc, BCom, BBA, and BCA at the undergraduate level, plus MA (Political Science, Sociology, Kannada) and MCom at the postgraduate level. Between 20 and 24 faculty members staff the departments. The PG offerings are significant — they save students from having to travel 100 km to Dharwad or Karwar for a master's degree.

Honavar is a fishing and areca-nut trading town on NH-66, the coastal highway linking Goa to Kerala. The taluk's geography — sandwiched between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea — creates a student catchment that is narrow but deep, stretching along the coast from Bhatkal to Kumta. The GFGC serves this corridor as the only government degree-plus-PG institution between Karwar and Bhatkal, a span of roughly 120 coastal kilometres.
