About Govt First Grade College Shahapur

Government First Grade College Shahapur is among the earliest higher-education institutions planted in what is now Yadgir district. Opened in 1983 — well before Yadgir's separation from Kalaburagi — the college operates on an 88-acre campus that ranks among the largest for any GFGC in northern Karnataka. Over 2,150 students are enrolled across eight undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, making it one of the busiest government colleges in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region.

Affiliated to Gulbarga University and holding NAAC B accreditation at a 2.31 CGPA, the institution offers BA, BSc, BBM, BCom, and BCA at the UG level, alongside MA, MSc, and MCom at the PG level. Nineteen faculty members staff the departments, and the library holds a steadily growing collection. The college's science labs support BSc students working through physics, chemistry, and mathematics practicals under university-prescribed syllabi.

Shahapur town sits at the crossroads of state highways linking Yadgir, Kalaburagi, and Raichur, and the college draws students from all three corridors. Its four-decade track record has produced graduates who staff local government offices, cooperative banks, and schools. For many first-generation learners in Shahapur taluk, the institution is the entry point into formal higher education — a role that the region's limited private college presence makes difficult to replicate elsewhere.
