About College of Sericulture Chintamani

College of Sericulture, Chintamani, established in 1956, is one of the oldest dedicated sericulture education institutions in India. Located in Chintamani, Chikkaballapur district — the geographical heart of Karnataka's mulberry silk belt — the college offers B.Sc Sericulture affiliated to the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru. Karnataka produces over 8,000 metric tonnes of raw silk annually — roughly 60% of India's total silk output — with Ramanagara, Mysuru, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, and Tumkur districts forming the core production zones. The curriculum covers mulberry cultivation and crop management, silkworm rearing (bivoltine and multivoltine varieties), cocoon harvesting, silk reeling, quality grading, and sericulture extension work. The college's own sericulture farm and rearing units provide hands-on training — students manage actual rearing cycles, which is essential for understanding the biological precision that silkworm rearing demands. Government fees apply, making the programme accessible to students from silk-farming families who form the primary applicant pool. Career outcomes are well-defined: Central Silk Board (CSB) officer posts, Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) recruitment, Karnataka State Sericulture Development Corporation (KSSDCA) extension officer positions, and Sericulture Department posts through KPSC are the primary government pathways. Private sector employment in silk reeling units, cocoon trading firms, and weaving cooperatives is the alternative. Bivoltine silk production — a higher-quality variety promoted by CSB for export markets — is increasingly relevant and technically demanding, creating demand for trained sericulturists. Campus hostel facilities are available for both male and female students. For students from silk-farming families in Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Ramanagara, and Mysuru districts, this is a niche but stable and well-compensated career pathway.
