About Bengaluru City University
Bengaluru City University (officially renamed Dr. Manmohan Singh Bengaluru City University in August 2025) is a public state university established in 2017 through the trifurcation of Bangalore University under the Karnataka State Universities (Amendment) Act of 2015. The trifurcation was recommended in March 2015 by Dr. Venugopal K R.
The university affiliates 204 degree colleges, 24 education colleges, and 9 autonomous colleges across urban Bengaluru. Notable affiliates include St. Joseph's College of Commerce, Jyoti Nivas College, Vijaya College, Government Science College, and Presidency College. Over 138 courses span Arts, Commerce, Science, Education, Management, and Vocational streams at UG, PG, Diploma, and Doctoral levels.
Facilities include a 1 lakh sq ft library with 2,50,000 books, seven hostels, and a multi-gym fitness centre. Placement averages range INR 3-5 LPA with TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture, and Deloitte recruiting.
The university operates under the motto "Be Boundless." The current Vice-Chancellor is Ramesh B., succeeding S. Japhet (first VC), Narasimha Murthy (interim, 2020), and Lingaraja Gandhi (2021). As the affiliating university for Bengaluru's core urban constituencies, BCU serves one of the largest concentrations of undergraduate students in Karnataka.
