About Bagalkot University
Bagalkot University is a public state university at Jamkhandi in Bagalkot district, established under the Karnataka State Universities (Amendment) Act of 2022 and operational from March 2023. It was created as part of the "One District, One University" initiative, which established eight new universities across Karnataka to decentralise higher education.
The university affiliates 71 colleges across Bagalkot district, covering all general degree and education institutions. Affiliated colleges offer undergraduate programmes including BA (History, Sociology, Political Science, Psychology, Music, Economics, Geography, Journalism, Sanskrit, Languages), B.Sc (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Zoology, Botany, Microbiology, Statistics), B.Com, BCA, BBA, B.Ed, and Social Work.
Bagalkot University describes its model as a fully digital and entrepreneurial university emphasising practical learning alongside academic study. The university serves a region officially categorised as educationally backward in northern Karnataka, aiming to improve access to higher education for students who previously had to travel to distant university centres.
The Vice-Chancellor is Anand S. Deshpande. The university holds recognition from the Government of Karnataka. Bagalkot district, situated along the Krishna River in northern Karnataka, is historically known for the Pattadakal and Aihole monuments (UNESCO World Heritage Sites) and a growing base in sugar, cement, and textile industries.
