About Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering Science Department

About SJCE Science Department Mysuru

The Science Department at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE), Mysuru supports both the engineering programme and standalone BSc/MSc offerings in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. SJCE, established in 1963, is one of Karnataka's oldest and most respected government-aided engineering colleges, affiliated to VTU. The science department benefits from SJCE's engineering infrastructure — instrument labs, computing facilities and research collaboration with NIE (National Institute of Engineering) Mysuru and CFTRI (Central Food Technological Research Institute) Mysuru, 3 km from the campus.

The campus is on Manandavadi Road (also called SJC Road), Mysuru — about 4 km from the city railway station and accessible by KSRTC and city auto.

Admission Process

BSc: Karnataka Government Degree Colleges portal in June, merit in 12th PCM or CBZ. MSc: University of Mysore MSc entrance test at Manasagangothri, June each year. SJCE science department MSc is a smaller, less publicised option than University of Mysore's main departments — competition may be lower for students with moderate entrance test scores who want Mysuru for their MSc.

Engineering College Science Department Advantage

Being within an engineering college means the Science department has access to SJCE's instrument labs — FTIR, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, materials testing equipment — that standalone science colleges at equivalent fee levels cannot provide. Physics students targeting CSIR-NET or GATE have used these labs for experimental preparation work. Faculty in Physics and Chemistry hold UGC and DST research projects. CFTRI Mysuru (3 km) has informal collaboration with chemistry faculty for food science research, giving MSc Chemistry students project exposure beyond the college curriculum.

Career Scope

BSc graduates target KPSC science teacher posts, MSc at University of Mysore or SJCE, and KCET-based professional admissions. MSc Physics and Chemistry graduates target CSIR-NET, GATE, BARC and ISRO entry-level roles. Mathematics graduates target MTech Mathematics or Statistics at NITs. CFTRI Mysuru absorbs chemistry postgraduates through project assistant and research associate positions — a specific local pathway not available for science graduates from most other Karnataka cities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SJCE a good choice for BSc or MSc in Mysuru?

Yes — specifically because of instrument lab access from the engineering side, CFTRI Mysuru research collaboration for Chemistry students, and the smaller MSc cohort size that may be less competitive than University of Mysore's main departments. The tradeoff is that SJCE's primary identity is engineering — science department students are a smaller community on campus than at dedicated science colleges like Yuvaraja's.

What is the MSc fee at SJCE Mysuru?

Annual MSc fee is approximately ₹18,000–₹25,000 at aided college rates. BSc is ₹15,000–₹20,000 per year. SC/ST scholarship applies. MSc admission through University of Mysore entrance test in June.
