About SIMS College of Nursing Shivamogga
SIMS College of Nursing is the nursing education wing of Shimoga Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), a government autonomous medical institution in Shivamogga, Karnataka. SIMS was established in 2005 on a 25-acre campus along the Bangalore-Honnavar Highway, with the nursing programme commencing around 2007. The institute is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru.
The nursing college is approved by the Indian Nursing Council (INC), New Delhi, and the Karnataka Nursing Council (KNC), Bangalore. It offers a four-year B.Sc Nursing programme with an annual intake of approximately 100 seats. The parent institution SIMS also runs MBBS (150 seats), MD/MS postgraduate programmes, and diploma courses in allied health disciplines including operation theatre technology, laboratory technology, dialysis, and radiology.
Clinical training for nursing students takes place at the Government McGann Teaching District Hospital, a 950-bed facility attached to SIMS. This hospital, whose foundation was laid by Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV, provides students with exposure to a wide range of medical and surgical cases across departments including general medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, and emergency medicine.
As a government institution, SIMS offers highly subsidised fees for nursing education, with annual tuition at approximately Rs 8,500 for government-quota seats. Admission is through NEET-UG followed by KEA counselling. The institute has over 1,200 students across its medical, nursing, and allied health programmes. The Shivamogga location gives students access to both urban and rural healthcare settings for community health postings and fieldwork.
