KPT Polytechnic Mangalore

Karnataka (Govt.) Polytechnic, Mangalore, popularly known as KPT, was established in 1946 under the erstwhile Madras Presidency, starting out in a rented building at Pandeshwar. The institute moved to its present 19-acre campus at Kadri Hills in 1954 and today runs wholly under the Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Karnataka, making it one of the oldest technical education institutions in the state and the second-largest polytechnic in Karnataka.

KPT offers eight three-year diploma programmes: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Polymer Technology. The last two, Chemical Engineering and Polymer Technology, are genuinely uncommon at the diploma level in coastal Karnataka, making KPT one of the few institutes in the region offering a diploma pathway into these specific technical fields.

Admission to KPT is based on SSLC (10th standard) marks, administered through the Directorate of Technical Education, Karnataka's annual diploma admission notification, typically issued around the time SSLC results are announced. This is a different route from KCET or COMEDK, which govern admission to bachelor's-level engineering degree programmes rather than polytechnic diplomas.

Mangalore's status as a port city and a base for major industrial employers, including Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited (KIOCL), Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Limited (MCF), and a growing IT presence including Infosys, gives KPT graduates a genuinely relevant regional industrial base to place into, particularly for its Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering diploma holders.
