Hanagal is a taluk headquarters situated approximately 40 kilometres northwest of Haveri city. The town holds significance in Karnataka's cultural and musical heritage as the hometown of Pandit Gangubai Hangal, the legendary Hindustani classical vocalist and Padma Vibhushan awardee who carried the town's name throughout her career. Architecturally, Hanagal is home to Chalukyan-era temples including the Tarakeshwara Temple dating to the 12th century, reflecting the region's connections to the Western Chalukya dynasty that built extensively across northern Karnataka.
As a government institution under the Department of Collegiate Education, Karnataka, fees are state-determined and kept at nominal levels for broad accessibility. Students from SC/ST, OBC, and economically backward categories receive scholarship support through state and central government schemes. The college has established itself as the primary degree-level education provider for Hanagal taluk, serving students who previously had to commute to Haveri or Dharwad, both over 35 kilometres away, for undergraduate education. Admissions are processed annually following II PUC results.
