Engineering Colleges in Karnataka 2026-27
Karnataka has 316 engineering colleges spread across 30 districts — more than any other state in South India. If you're finishing 2nd PUC with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, engineering in Karnataka is one of the most well-mapped admission paths in the country. KCET and COMEDK handle the bulk of admissions. This page covers what is actually available, what it costs, which colleges deliver on placements, and what an engineering degree from Karnataka gets you in the job market.
Admission to Engineering Colleges in Karnataka 2026-27
Most government and aided private engineering seats are filled through KCET (Karnataka Common Entrance Test), conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA). Your KCET rank determines which college and branch you can access. Private unaided colleges fill additional seats through COMEDK UGET — a separate entrance exam with its own rank list. NRI and management quota seats are filled directly by colleges.
The KCET rank formula: 50% weight to your KCET exam marks, 50% to your 2nd PUC PCM board marks. Two students with the same KCET score can end up 15,000 ranks apart based on board performance. Use our KCET Rank Predictor with both sets of marks before counselling opens.

Branch Selection — What Each Delivers
CSE and ISE are the highest-demand branches. They close at the tightest ranks and deliver the strongest IT placement outcomes. If your KCET rank is above 5,000 and your goal is software, CSE at a verified mid-tier college beats a core branch at a top college.
ECE suits students targeting electronics, embedded systems, semiconductor roles (Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Bosch, ISRO) or IT. RVCE ECE and BMS ECE both have placement records comparable to their CSE programmes.
Mechanical and Civil suit students targeting government jobs (KPSC, BEL, HAL, DRDO, PWD), manufacturing and infrastructure. Government Engineering Colleges offer these branches at Rs 30,000-50,000 per year with full PSC eligibility.
VTU vs Deemed University
Most Karnataka engineering colleges are affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU). VTU degrees are recognised by Karnataka PSC for all government engineering recruitment. Some colleges operate under deemed universities — Manipal, PES, Dayananda Sagar, Jain. Deemed university degrees are valid for private sector roles but check Karnataka PSC eligibility separately if government jobs are a possibility.
Fees and Financial Aid
Government colleges: Rs 25,000-50,000 per year. Aided private colleges (RVCE, BMS, BMSCE): Rs 70,000-90,000. Unaided private colleges: Rs 1-3 lakh. Deemed universities: Rs 2-5 lakh. SC/ST students qualify for full fee reimbursement at government and aided colleges through the Social Welfare Department Karnataka post-matric scholarship. Apply on joining day.
Career Outcomes
IT and software — TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture recruit from over 150 Karnataka campuses. Product companies — Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Flipkart recruit from the top 10-15 campuses. Core engineering — HAL, BEL, ISRO, DRDO, KPWD recruit from government and VTU-affiliated colleges. Starting salaries: mass IT Rs 3.5-6 lakh, product companies Rs 10-25 lakh, core engineering and government Rs 4-8 lakh.
