KLE Ayurveda Medical College

KLE Ayurveda Medical College, formally known as Shri BM Kankanwadi Ayurved Mahavidyalaya, Shahapur, has one of the more distinctive founding stories in Karnataka medical education. The institution was originally established in 1933 by Shri Basappanna Mallappanna Kankanawadi -- a retired police officer and philanthropist who, after being treated successfully by an Ayurvedic physician when all other systems had failed for his wife, donated his entire retirement earnings of Rs 50,000 to establish an Ayurveda institution. The college was taken over by the KLE (Karnataka Lingayat Education) Society in 1990 and relocated to its current premises in Shahapur, Belagavi -- 590003 in 2005. KLE Society is one of the largest educational societies in Asia with a 90+ year legacy, running over 250 institutions including KLE University, JNMC Belagavi, and multiple medical, dental, and engineering colleges.

The college is affiliated to KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research (Deemed to be University), Belagavi -- JNMC Campus -- which holds NAAC Grade A accreditation and Category A status by MHRD. It is also affiliated to RGUHS, Bangalore, and approved by CCIM and Ministry of AYUSH. BAMS: 100 seats per year. 5.5-year programme. Admission via NEET-UG + KEA Karnataka AYUSH counselling. Fee: approximately Rs 2 lakh/year (tuition); management quota approximately Rs 4 lakh/year; NRI quota Rs 6 lakh/year. Hostel: Rs 3,000/month (Rs 95,000/year non-AC, Rs 1,45,000/year AC). PG programmes: MD Panchakarma and MD Dravyaguna (via AIAPGET). The attached 130-bed teaching hospital has OPD, IPD, Panchakarma, and specialised units. The Shahapur location is significant -- Belagavi is 30 km from the Maharashtra border, making this an attractive BAMS option for students from Maharashtra, Goa, and North Karnataka who prefer the KLE brand without relocating to Bangalore. The KLE institutional infrastructure (including hospital networks, research facilities, and inter-institutional collaboration) provides BAMS students additional clinical and research pathways beyond what standalone Ayurveda colleges can offer.
