Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore is India's premier research university — founded in 1909 through a partnership between industrialist Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata and the Government of India. Ranked #1 University and #2 Overall in NIRF 2025, #5 in QS Asian Rankings (South Asia) 2026, and among THE World Rankings top 100 in Engineering, IISc is the gold standard for research and postgraduate education in India. Its 440-acre campus in Malleshwaram, Bangalore houses 45 academic departments. The UG BTech in Mathematics and Computing was introduced in 2022 — admission through JEE Advanced with a 2025 closing rank of 856 (General).

This is the critical distinction about IISc: UG students almost universally proceed to PhD programmes at top international universities (USA, Europe, Singapore) rather than campus placements. The "placement" model at IISc is PhD/research career-focused — not industry job-focused like engineering colleges. Applying to IISc BTech for industry placement is the wrong reason; applying for research careers in AI, materials science, mathematics or physics is the right one.
IISc is NOT an Engineering College — This Distinction Matters
IISc is a research university with a small BTech intake (introduced 2022) — not a traditional engineering college like IITs or NITs. The campus culture is PhD-dominant: 3,500+ PhD scholars vs approximately 97 UG BTech students. Faculty research in IISc departments is published in Nature, Science and Cell. If you want to go to IISc for a BTech and immediately join an IT company — that's not what IISc is designed for. If you want to spend 4 years in a 1909-founded research university, surrounded by India's top PhD scholars, preparing for a research career or PhD at MIT/Stanford/Cambridge — IISc BTech is arguably the best option in India.
440-Acre Malleshwaram Campus
IISc's campus in Malleshwaram, central North Bangalore, was established in 1909 and has grown into a 440-acre self-contained academic city. The JRD Tata Memorial Library (named for Jamsetji Tata's son) holds 4+ lakh volumes. Hostels, faculty residences, guest houses, sports facilities, a bank, post office, hospital and shopping complex make the campus fully self-sustaining. Malleshwaram's location means the campus is 8 km from Bangalore city centre and well-connected by Metro (Green Line).
Frequently Asked Questions
Does IISc Bangalore accept KCET?
No. IISc is a deemed university and Institute of Eminence. BTech admission is through JEE Advanced only, via JoSAA/CSAB counselling. BSc Research admission is through JEE Advanced or IISER Aptitude Test (IAT). KCET is not applicable.
What is IISc BTech cutoff for 2025?
JEE Advanced 2025 BTech Mathematics and Computing closing rank was 856 (General, Round 1). This is extremely competitive — effectively top 856 JEE Advanced qualifiers nationally. SC/ST categories have significantly more accessible cutoffs.
What do IISc BTech graduates do after degree?
The vast majority (93 out of 97 in 2024-25) proceed to higher studies — PhD programmes at top global universities. IISc BTech is a research career pathway, not an industry placement gateway. Students targeting immediate industry jobs post-graduation should evaluate IITs or NITs instead.
