About Government Ayurveda Medical College

Government Ayurveda Medical College, Bangalore, established in 1898, is one of the oldest Ayurveda educational institutions in Karnataka and among the earliest in India. It is a state government institution under the Department of AYUSH, Government of Karnataka. The college is located in Jayanagar, Bengaluru, affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bangalore, and recognised by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), New Delhi. As a government institution, it operates under direct government oversight with curriculum, examinations, and fee structure regulated by the state.

The college offers BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) -- a 5.5-year programme (4.5 years academic + 1 year compulsory internship) -- and MD Ayurveda at postgraduate level across multiple specialisations. Admission to BAMS is through NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) followed by AYUSH counselling conducted by KEA (Karnataka Examinations Authority). Karnataka domicile students are eligible for the state quota (85% of seats). Non-Karnataka students compete for the All-India quota (15% seats) via the AYUSH national counselling. Minimum NEET qualification: 50% for General category (40% for SC/ST/OBC). Government quota annual fee: approximately Rs 13,500 (state government regulated) -- significantly lower than private BAMS colleges where fees range Rs 2-5 lakh/year. Hostel facilities are available on campus for outstation students.

Being a state government college, Government Ayurveda Medical College Bangalore offers access to a government hospital attached to the college for clinical training -- patients from lower-income backgrounds form the clinical training base, giving students exposure to a wide range of conditions. Government BAMS graduates are eligible for government health service jobs in Karnataka, including Grade 1 AYUSH Medical Officer posts with a starting salary of approximately Rs 55,000-65,000/month.
