About Bishop Cotton Women's Christian College Bengaluru
Bishop Cotton Women's Christian College, Bengaluru was founded in 1925 by the Church of South India (CSI) — named after Bishop George Edward Lynch Cotton, the Bishop of Calcutta who championed girls' education in colonial India. At 100 years old, it is one of the oldest women's degree colleges in Bengaluru and one of the few with a central location (St Mark's Road) that has remained accessible despite the city's expansion outward. The college is affiliated to Bengaluru City University with NAAC A grade.
The campus is on St Mark's Road, about 600 metres from MG Road metro station (Purple and Green lines) — one of the most transit-accessible college locations in Bengaluru for women students commuting from any part of the city.

Campus and a Century of Women's Education
The heritage campus on St Mark's Road has a chapel, central library, science labs, computer lab, auditorium, and a girls' hostel. The chapel — operational since 1925 — is a CSI heritage structure. The library holds collections dating to the college's founding decade. NSS and NCC units are active. The women's studies cell runs workshops on legal rights, career planning and digital literacy — aimed at first-generation women graduates from outside Bengaluru who may be navigating city life alongside academic demands. The college has an alumni network of women professionals in law, medicine, IT and public administration across Bengaluru going back to the 1940s.
Career Scope
BA English graduates from this college have a track record in Bengaluru's content, media and publishing sectors — partially because the English department has maintained a strong literary culture and partially because the central Bengaluru location gives students access to internships with media organisations in the MG Road-Brigade Road corridor during their degree. BSc graduates target KCET-based professional course admissions (BPharm, BSc Nursing for a second degree) or MSc. BCA graduates target entry-level IT roles in Bengaluru's IT corridors — Electronic City, Whitefield and Manyata Tech Park all run BMTC routes that pass through or near MG Road.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bishop Cotton Women's College only for Christian students?
No. The college has both minority (Christian) quota seats and general merit seats. General merit seats are open to women of all communities through Bengaluru City University portal. Minority quota seats are reserved for Christian candidates and require church membership documentation. The minority institution status means the management has autonomy over minority quota but cannot restrict general seats to a particular community.
