About University of Agricultural Sciences Dharwad
University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad (UASD), established in 1986, is the primary agricultural university for north Karnataka — covering Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Belagavi, Bagalkot, Vijayapura, and Uttara Kannada districts. It offers B.Sc (Agriculture), B.Sc (Horticulture), M.Sc across multiple agricultural specialisations, and PhD programmes through its constituent colleges including the College of Agriculture Dharwad, College of Horticulture Sirsi, College of Forestry Sirsi, and College of Agriculture Bijapur. ICAR-approved and NAAC A accredited, UASD is particularly recognised for research in dryland and rainfed farming systems — critically relevant for north Karnataka's semi-arid and rain-shadow agricultural zones where conventional irrigation-dependent approaches don't work. Flagship crop improvement programmes at UASD include sunflower, cotton, jowar, groundnut, and pigeon pea research — crops that dominate north Karnataka's farm landscape. The university maintains over 15 research stations across different agro-climatic zones of the region, allowing location-specific crop trials and extension activities. Sirsi campus's horticulture focus covers arecanut, cardamom, pepper, and plantation crops — serving the Western Ghats and Malnad belt's specific horticultural needs. Government employment through KPSC Agricultural Officer recruitment is the dominant career outcome, with the university's regional standing giving graduates recognition in northern Karnataka's agricultural administration. Private sector agri-input company recruitment — from Syngenta, BASF, Coromandel International, and state cooperative banks — is the secondary employment pathway. Campus hostel facilities are available at all constituent college locations. For students from north Karnataka's farming communities, UASD represents the most relevant and accessible path to agricultural careers in the region.
